Missing Scientist is a pre-FTL civilization event chain that can trigger if an Observation Post is conducting Passive Observation on a pre-Industrial Age civilization. It can happen multiple times per game. Once the event chain starts dismantling the Observation Post or revealing the empire's presence will no longer be possible until the event chain ends one way or another.

Missing Scientist

One of the scientists working at the Observation Post orbiting [pre-FTL world name] has been reported missing. [he or she] was taking part in a covert mission to collect plant samples from the [planet or moon]'s surface, but did not return to the shuttle with the rest of his team.

We have been conducting a limited search so as not to alert the natives, but so far without success.

Trigger conditions: Mean time to happen:

Time 5000 months

Keep up the search.

Scientist Found Dead

We have finally recovered the body of the missing scientist on [pre-FTL world name]... or what remained of it, at any rate. It looks like [he or she] fell victim to a large indigenous predator. An unfortunate loss to our science team, but at least the locals are still oblivious to our presence.

Trigger conditions:
  • Missing Scientist
  • 25% chance
Mean time to happen:

Time 10 days

The Directive has been upheld.
  • Loss of Personnel modifier added for 12 months, giving the following effects: Society from Jobs −10%

Strange Reports from [pre-FTL world name]

We are receiving strange reports from our observers above [pre-FTL world name]. One of the native kingdoms has rallied under a mysterious religious figure, and we have seen evidence of them using advanced technology far beyond their current level of development. Could this be related to our missing scientist?

Trigger conditions:
  • Missing Scientist
  • 75% chance
Mean time to happen:

Time 30 months

Curious.
  • Pre-FTL civilization gains 20 Awareness if Partially Aware
  • Pre-FTL civilization advances to Industrial Age
  • If the Non-interference Act resolution has been passed the empire will be in breach of galactic law for 10 years

Rogue Scientist Consolidates Power

We have received alarming reports from the surface of [pre-FTL world name]. It looks like our rogue scientist is consolidating power - [he or she] has given one of the feudal kingdoms access to advanced weaponry, and they are now in the process of conquering the rest of the [planet or moon] in his name.

A plan has been put forward to remove [him or her] from power, but it will require significant ground forces. There is no telling what effect this will have on the native population, as many have come to see [him or her] as a god.

Trigger conditions:
  • Strange Reports from [pre-FTL world name]
Mean time to happen:

Time 60 months

The operation is a go. Remove [him or her].
  • Pre-FTL civilization becomes Fully Aware
  • Pre-FTL civilization advances to Machine Age
  • Issue Special Project: Extract Missing Scientist
It would only make things worse...
  • Pre-FTL civilization becomes Fully Aware
  • Pre-FTL civilization advances to Machine Age

Successful Extraction

We have successfully extracted the rogue scientist from [pre-FTL world name]! Hundreds of natives were tragically gunned down when they launched suicidal attacks against our forces in a futile attempt to protect their "god."

Our legal system will now deal with the scientist, but the impact of these events on the [planet or moon]'s civilization must be immense. They still possess some of our technology, and their deity has just been spirited away by invaders from the stars.

Trigger conditions:
  • Rogue Scientist Consolidated Power
Is triggered only by:

Finishing the Extract Rogue Scientist special project

At least one problem has been dealt with.

Missile Strikes Observation Post!

A barrage of surface-to-space missiles have been launched from the surface of [pre-FTL world name] at our observation post in high orbit! The station was destroyed with no survivors.

It looks like the primitive civilization on the [planet or moon]'s surface has advanced at an incredible rate - no doubt thanks to the efforts of our rogue scientist. They can no longer be considered primitive, and the window of opportunity to remove the scientist from power has been closed.

Trigger conditions:
  • Rogue Scientist Consolidated Power
Is triggered only by:

The Extract Rogue Scientist special project expires

Disconcerting.
  • The Observation Post is destroyed

Situation Calms on [pre-FTL world name]

The situation on [pre-FTL world name] seems to have settled down a bit since the successful extraction of our rogue scientist. Without [him or her] to interpret the data, the technical schematics [he or she] brought with [him or her] are of no use to them. They have started reverting back to their old ways.

Trigger conditions:
  • Successful Extraction
  • 33% chance if the Pre-FTL civilization does not have the Mechanist origin
  • 50% chance if the Pre-FTL civilization has the Mechanist origin
Mean time to happen:

Time 30 months

Some good news at last.
  • Pre-FTL civilization regresses to Steam Age or Renaissance Age

Impending Doom on [pre-FTL world name]

Having witnessed the apparent rapture of their savior, the inhabitants of [pre-FTL world name] are not in a good place. Society is splintering, and tensions have risen to untenable levels.
If we do not take action, they will use our technology to tear themselves apart in a planet-wide religious war.

Trigger conditions:
  • Successful Extraction
  • Pre-FTL civilization does not have the Mechanist origin
  • 33% chance
Mean time to happen:

Time 30 months

Retrieve our technology.
  • If the Non-interference Act resolution has been passed the empire will be in breach of galactic law for 10 years
We must not risk further cultural contamination.

Missile Strikes Observation Post!

A barrage of surface-to-space missiles have been launched from the surface of [pre-FTL world name] at our Observation Post! The station was destroyed with no survivors.

It looks like the primitive civilization on the [planet or moon]'s surface is continuing to advance at an incredible rate - despite the fact that we removed the influence of their so-called "god." The technology [he or she] gave them must have triggered a lasting scientific revolution.

Trigger conditions:
  • Successful Extraction
  • 33% chance if the Pre-FTL civilization does not have the Mechanist origin
  • 50% chance if the Pre-FTL civilization has the Mechanist origin
Mean time to happen:

Time 30 months

This is why we have a directive of noninterference.
  • The Observation Post is destroyed
  • Pre-FTL civilization advances to Early Space Age

Religious Conflicts on [pre-FTL world name]

[pre-FTL world name] has descended into a massive war following the successful extraction of our rogue scientist. The empire [he or she] built has fragmented into several quarreling factions, each with their own interpretation of his religious dogma.

Fighting has been particularly fierce due to the destructive weaponry the natives are now using. Several radiological "dirty bombs" have so far been detonated by the opposing factions, and it looks like the conflict is only getting started.

Trigger conditions: Mean time to happen:

Time 100 days

This will not end well...
  • A nuclear war will start in 1 or 2 years
